Port Angeles WA Area Guide

 


Port Angeles is located in Clallam County, Washington. Port Angeles is home to about 19,000 people as of 2000 and is the county seat of Clallam County. It is also the largest city in the Olympic Peninsula.

Nearby you will find the Dungeness National Wildlife Preserve, Lakes Crescent and Sutherland, Sol Duc Hot Springs and numerous rivers, beaches and parks, making Port Angeles truly ideal for nature lovers. Here you can experience everything from golf to gardening, with rare interference from weather. The downtown shopping district of Port Angeles is alive and always bustling with people. There are many friendly shops, gardens, and outdoor art to make you feel right at home.


Port Angeles History

Port Angeles HistoryThe first reported sighting of the Peninsula was made by Juan Perez in 1774. The first confirmed report of the Strait of Juan de Fuca was made in 1787.

The harbor in Port Angeles was named Puerto de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles, meaning Port of Our Lady of the Angels, by Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza in 1791. By the mid-1800s, the name though had been shortened to its current form.


Port Angeles Parks and Recreation

Port Angeles ParksThe Parks and Recreation Department of Port Angeles is committed to providing and maintaining a safe environment for community members and visitors to enjoy. The area’s parks include picnic areas, playgrounds, baseball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, beach access, hiking trails, walking paths and shelters.

Lincoln Park
At Lincoln Park you will find two ponds in the northeastern corner. They are home to many different species of ducks and birds. Fishing is available for youth 14 years of age and younger. Park amenities include a playground, restrooms, picnic tables, tennis courts, open fields, trails, youth baseball fields, running water, cooking facilities and a BMX track.

Sail & Paddle Park
Sail and Paddle Park features many great views of the harbor, Port Angeles, and the Olympic Mountains. It also features a special area for people with disabilities.

Waterfront Trail
The Waterfront Trail follows the waterfront of Port Angeles and extends from the Coast Guard Station entrance gate on Ediz Hook to just west of the old Rayonier mill site before connecting to the Olympic Discovery Trail. The City maintains five miles of the trail for your enjoyment. Amenities include walking paths, park benches, restrooms, and beach access.

Francis Street Park
This park is a main access point for Water Front Trail users. Sweeping views of the harbor makes this a community show case park for our local citizenry and visitors.

Port Angeles Events

Port Angeles EventsHere in Port Angeles you will find many fun events taking place all year round! Come participate with your family and friends in the Snowgrass event, where you can listen to numerous local bands showcase their skills. You definitely won’t want to miss out on the Taste of The Peninsula event with great food and wine.

Snowgrass
The Snowgrass event is now in its 7th year. It will feature a number of local bands playing bluegrass music to raise funds for First Step Family Support Center.

North Olympic Land Trusts StreamFest
Here you’ll find fun for all ages while celebrating the North Olympic Peninsula's unique natural and cultural assets and gaining inspiration and information for enjoying and caring for them. There will be food, drinks, live music, guided nature experiences, a Procession of the Species costume parade, informational booths and many other activities.

A Taste of the Peninsula
The Olympic Peninsula wineries and the world-class harvest of the Olympic Peninsula will be featured here! Chefs will prepare food samplings using local food items and wineries pour their wines for tasting. There is also live music, an art exhibit, and a silent auction. This function is a benefit for the Y-ARTS Community Art program.

Port Angeles is the place to be for fun for the family all year round! Check out the Clallam County Historical Society’s Museum to see the history of Port Angeles. If you like art, then the Jack Gunter Art and Design gallery is perfect for you. For a sophisticated evening out, stop by the Lost Mountain Winery and relax!

Clallam County Historical Society’s Museum at the Carnegie
The Clallam County Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving story of the north Olympic Peninsula. Since 1948, The Society has collected artifacts pertaining to Clallam County. The Society also operates a research library and is a partner with the Clallam County Genealogical Society. See Clallam County’s story through exhibits at The Museum at the Carnegie!

Port Angeles Art and DesignJack Gunter Art and Design
Jack Gunter Art and Design offers access to original art and limited edition prints by Jack Gunter. Gunter is a Northwest artist who has painted over 1000 paintings, major murals, and is held in many corporate, public and private collections.

Lost Mountain Winery
On a wooded shoulder of Lost Mountain, high in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains, this small winery crafts award winning red wines without added sulfites in a traditional Italian style. For nearly 28 years they have been a local secret with beautiful views, towering firs, and excellent wines. The winery has recently been featured in "Best Places - Northwest", "Hidden Northwest" and "Best Places to Kiss." And the Northwest Wine Guide and Wine Press Northwest have both recognized them for having "Some of the best reds produced in the state."

Port Angeles WineryOlympic Cellars Winery
Olympic Cellars has barrel-shaped front doors that invite you into the charming barn turned winery. The winery is tucked against the backdrop of the snow-capped Olympic Mountains. This women-owned and operated winery produces about 3,200 cases of award-winning, handcrafted wines from some of Washington’s most prestigious vineyards.
